Are you having a reaction to your skincare?

Chances are that you’ve had a reaction to a skin-care product or cosmetic somewhere on your face or body but how do you know if you are having an allergic reaction or just an irritation?

The first step is to identify which product caused the problem and discontinue its use.

Here are some helpful points to help determine what kind of reaction you are having.

Irritation

  • Upon removal of product, the itching or burning sensation stops.
  • Irritation reaction may or may not repeat itself when product is applied to the skin again, depending if skin is in a sensitive state.
  • This is a “temporary reaction”, not an allergy.
  • The key here is patience. Experiment with the item or items you suspect. The reaction could have happened during a time while your immune system was low or your skin was compromised (possibly from a sunburn, windburn, a medication you were taking at that time, etc.)  Try the product again after a while then see how your skin responds. You may just need to avoid this product or suspected ingredient(s).

Allergic Reaction

  • Repeats every time product is applied.
  • Upon removal of product burning or itching does not stop.
  • Blisters, welting and/or peeling may occur later.
  • Immune system has determined that the product is life-threatening and prepares anti-bodies.
  • Stop using that product immediately and avoid suspected ingredient(s).

If matters aren’t improving after four to six weeks, you should seek out a dermatologist for an evaluation.Once you figure out your trigger ingredient is you’ll become a master at reading cosmetic ingredient labels so you can protect yourself.
