Weight Gain in Men

Hormonal Causes

These changes usually occur as men get into their forties (sometimes before that), and include:

  • Decreased testosterone. Testosterone is important for maintaining muscle mass. It also increases energy. It helps to maintain insulin sensitivity and thus prevents diabetes. As testosterone declines men usually develop a belly. This further increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Thyroid deficiency slows metabolism.
  • Growth hormone levels decline resulting in decreased muscle mass and increased fat.

Non-hormonal weight gain

  • Extra calories: Most people in the U.S. have grown up with the “finish your plate” advice from parents, and most portion sizes (particularly fast foods) are too big, and particularly rich in carbohydrates. This is an important cause of weight gain.
  • Lack of exercise: This also leads to weight gain.
  • Lack of sleep: Lack of adequate sleep slows metabolism which puts on pounds.
  • Drugs: Steroids, anti-depressants, anti-diabetic drugs and anti-hypertension drugs may all cause weight gain.
  • Stress tends to increase weight mostly through a hormonal mechanism, but it also leads to snacking between meals.

Our treatments involve the use of natural bio-identical hormone therapy given by the most natural routes and with strict monitoring. We avoid using artificial hormones (prescription drugs) which are known to increase risk of heart attack, stroke and breast cancer. Once existing hormone levels in your blood are measured and deficiencies are identified, treatment begins to replenish and balance your hormones.

Our treatment protocols, backed by scientific research, have been designed to avoid risks while relieving symptoms and providing renewed vigor and vitality. Symptoms from Andropause are relieved with restoration on the natural hormone balance.

The goal is to improve quality of life and reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke and cancer.
